How to Write an Application Essay Overnight

Most students think essays take days – even weeks – to write successfully. Truthfully, it is nicer to have this large amount of time to tackle the application essay. You can think up more ideas, organize more thoroughly and revise more readily. However, writing an application essay is not as impossible as most students think it is. In fact, it may be easier than some of the academic assignments you’ve had to undergo. To compose an application essay in a short amount of time – even overnight – all you need to do is remember a few simple, important steps:

  • Pick a great hook. This could be a meaningful story; an interesting question; a thoughtful quote or a startling statement. Whatever it is, make sure it’s relevant to who you are, and go with it. This will be the first sentence or first few sentences, and by making them entertaining or intriguing, you’ll better ensure that the application officer will actually read the rest of your essay.
  • Be honest about who you are. Even if you could write a whole college application essay that made you sound better than Gandhi, why should you? No one’s going to believe it. The trick it to stay open an honest. Be up front about who you are and what you believe. You’re likely to win more votes for the openness and honesty.
  • Make a plan. If you’re building your essay around a story, than make a brief outline of your story and the points you’ll address in reference to it. Know how you’re entertaining pieces and you’re overall hook relate to the meat of your essay.
  • Make it readable. This isn’t your biology report you’re writing. You’re crafting a piece that’s supposed to be vivid and entertaining, so have some fun with it! You’ll find that a little creative freedom will help you stave off discouragement. Write from the heart; this essay is about you, after all.
  • Address the college’s needs, and how you fulfill them. This is perhaps the entire reason for a college application essay. Basically, you need to make sure you’re entertaining essay reveals who you are and how you’ll be an asset to the school. Address the college’s needs; make the reader feel as though they’re being considered.
  • Write clear; don’t embellish. You don’t need to have some advanced SAT word gracing every sentence – this will just make your essay take longer and give you a massive headache. Be clear and direct about one specific facet involving you. It’s important to get your meaning across – not decorate your essay with a bunch of useless flourishes. Trust us, the admissions officers will see right through that façade.
